Sir: You report that ministers are considering the introduction of a voluntary identity card system to ease the passport chaos (30 June). Surely such a card is already available, showing name, address, date and place of birth, photograph and signature. It's called a photocard driving licence and is valid for 10 years. Why can't this be used as a "passport" within the EU? Even non-drivers could apply for the provisional version.
