Sir: The words "abolish the hereditary peers" are much used. The hereditary peers are not being abolished, only their right to sit, speak and vote in the upper house. The peers will simply return to their country estates and continue to throw a much-needed splash of somewhat eccentric colour on to our social tapestry.
