Sir: During the late 1970s and early 1980s, I was teaching English as a second language and had a number of Chilean refugees in my classes. All had fled from the brutality of the Pinochet regime, and some had been badly tortured. As I have always treasured the memory of these bright and courageous people, when I heard of Pinochet's arrest I gave a silent cheer.

You may imagine the puzzlement I felt upon reading Andrew Neil's article ("Pinochet was a vile Fascist but Allende was no hero", 22 October). I now wonder what happened to all the Chilean refugees who were so obscenely tortured by Salvador Allende. I guess they must have gone to the college down the road.
