Sir: The suggestions received for the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square (report, 27 December) range from the puerile to the bizarre but all seem to favour a single figure, many of whom will be deservedly forgotten within a decade or two. My own choice would be for a sculpture of a group of banner-waving men, women and children to represent the many thousands of citizens who, over the years, have used Trafalgar Square as a rallying point in support of their cause. Let this be a monument to the people rather than an individual.
