Sir: I was surprised to read in "Protection for police whistleblowers" (16 July) that there is a need to protect police offices who uphold the law from their colleagues by providing safe houses, transfers to other areas etc.
This implies that so many offices routinely break the law with impunity that the few honest ones need such measures to defend themselves. How can the police authorities let such a situation arise? If the police, as a body, are so corrupt that they are unable to deal with criminals within their ranks, what confidence can the rest of us have in them?
