Letter: PR exercise

Sir: So now even our MPs are getting worried about low turnouts in elections and are suggesting various "wheezes" to entice people to vote in greater numbers.

They can forget them. Until local councils regain some, if not all, of the powers they have lost over the past decades, why should we, the people, show any interest at all in what they do?

Quite frankly, with our present "first-past-the-post" election system, it's equally pointless voting in many of our parliamentary constituencies, as the result is also a foregone conclusion.

Electoral reform and more power to local councils are two "wheezes" that might just work.
