Sir: I almost agree with John Lowry (letter, 7 December) about the Scouse origins of the phrase "queer as a clockwork orange". However, in Lern Yerself Scouse I think the translation of "He's as queer as a clockwork orange" was "He enjoys being kissed after scoring a goal."
