Sir: Three hundred cheers to David Aaranovich in his support of clean air for non-smokers and distaste for nouvelle smokers ("Give me just one good reason why we should be nice to smokers", 8 October).
He is less than observant, however, when he says that he has never found a restaurant where smoking is banned altogether. When did he last pass a McDonald's?
After living in Singapore (where smoking is outlawed virtually everywhere) for her first five years, my daughter enjoyed a totally smoke-free existence to the extent that she equated waving a cigarette in public to brandishing a gun.
Our return to England gives me real concern for her future as a non-smoker.
