Letter: Telephone trick

Sir: Professor George Solt complains of the lack of operators available to answer calls to BT's 150 line (letter, 25 November). He may wish to consider using this little ruse.

A short while ago I called 150 with a query. After negotiating the labyrinthine tone-key pushing routine to be directed to the "correct" operator, I too was informed that there were no operators available. Repeated attempts proved fruitless.

Being of a cynical disposition, I adjusted my "tone pushing" to be directed to a "sales" operator rather than a "queries" operator. You will not be surprised to hear that my call was then answered immediately, and my query subsequently dealt with.
