Sir: No amount of words from the tobacco industry will make smoking unaddictive, although John Carlisle (letter, 14 October) would probably argue that heroin is not addictive since there do exist ex-users who are able to stay clean. The fact that 11 million of us managed to quit smoking is a testament to our fear of dying a horrible death, and nothing else.
