Sir: Even for a Conservative leader, Mr Hague's "new" position on the euro elevates cynicism to new heights. Whilst telling the electorate that his party will not support joining the single currency this parliament or next, whatever the circumstances or national interest, he is now trying to stifle debate within his party.

Stand your ground Ken Clarke and others. Your party, and the country, may need you sooner than you think.
