Letter: Universe
Sir: I was interested to read that "We're not as ancient as we thought", suggesting that the universe is only 12 billion years old (report, 26 May). This reminded me of something you published last year which said the universe is a lot older than we thought. I read both with increasing bafflement. What confused me was: "The universe is approximately 12 billion years old - similar to the oldest stars." Isn't that like saying: "I am 42, similar to my oldest leg"? Life is too short. I will treat your next prediction with all the apathy I can muster.
