Letter: Who lost the peace?
Sir: One way of helping peace in Northern Ireland would be to get the Orangemen to recognise what they are. They are Irishmen longing to be British.
There is no great harm in this. Two million Irish live in England now.
The Orangemen are no more British than my grannie's cat. They are born, reared and live on the island of Ireland.
They fought in two world wars. So what? More southern Irish volunteered than any other nation.
Orangemen don't want to be dominated by the Church. Neither do they in Dublin. The heat of anti clericals in the South would roast Ian Paisley.
Until the Orangemen answer the question whether they are English, Irish or what, we can never have a lasting peace.
