Sir: Pace Steven Berkhoff on the demonisation of Jews (Comment, 18 August), it was not Michelangelo who gave Moses horns but St Jerome, in a mistranslation of the Hebrew into Latin in the Vulgate Bible. What he should have written was "radiate" - from qaran, to radiate light, which is derived from qeren, horn, hence the literal translation, "his face was horned." In other words, Moses should have a halo rather than horns.
