Letters: Sweatshop scandals

Sir: The question is, do we care enough about what happens in other countries as long as it is not in our back yard?

Western manufacturers are forced to chase around the world for the cheapest possible labour and I can see no reason why anyone should manufacture anything in Europe in the long term.

Fortunately, there are a number of high street retailers in the UK that have shown loyalty to my company, but with the strength of the pound and pressures on profits they too have to look to cheaper labour countries to compete. In a free market economy, who is there to monitor the standards of decency in a world where only profit counts?
