Deap Vally return after three years with new track 'Smile More' - video premiere

Featuring the band's classic, anthemic rock sound and a Patti Smith-esque snarl

Deap Vally are back in a big way - they just put out their new track 'Smile More' off upcoming album Femejism and now we're premiering the accompanying video.

You've got the LA duo's classic, anthemic rock n' roll sound with some gnarly guitar riffs and a Patti Smith-esque snarl in the vocal delivery. It's the first track they've released since 2013's Sistrionix [produced by Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner] and they clearly intended to make you sit up and listen.

If you've ever had a guy tell you to “smile” in that patronising I'm just trying to be friendly tone that makes you clench your fist without thinking - this song basically soundtracks that moment.

The band teamed up with Canadian filmmaker and musician Nina Ljeti, who says: "What I love most about 'Smile More' is that the lyrics and message resonate with people of all backgrounds and walks of life, who are fighting for what they want and believe in, despite social opposition.

"I wanted to compliment the universality of the track by shooting people around LA who, to me, embody this message."

Q&A with Deap Vally

What are you listening to at the moment?

Julie: Fat White Family, JJUUJJUU, Kiev, Alec Baldwin's podcast Here's the Thing

Lindsey: One of my best friends is an ethnomusicology student and is always playing really obscure, amazing world music— stuff that she’s studying in school and then her vinyl collection. I spend a lot of time at her house and I’m obsessed with everything she plays. I want to steal her music collection.

"Left to my own devices I listen to a lot of classic stuff: T. Rex, Prince, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, David Bowie, and some more current stuff too: Tinariwen, Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ first EP, Queens of the Stone Age.

What have the last three years been like - what have you been up to and how does it feel putting out the new track?

Exciting to finally get something out! FEMEJISM has been 2 years in the making, during which time we've played bass in other bands (White Lung, JJUUJJUU), changed labels, taken over the 'business' of our band, and had a baby!

What should fans expect in terms of more new material?

Bombastic mind-blowing riffology, mixed with some fun, some rebellion, and some longing.

What are your plans for summer 2016?

Returning (FINALLY!) to the UK to play a handful of shows with a bunch of new material, then just getting ready to launch the record— shooting lots of music videos, hanging out with the baby, and getting the live show ready to tour the world in the Fall.
