Caught in the Net: Thom Yorke's Atoms hit their groove

Some time back, Thom Yorke unveiled a supergroup of sorts featuring bassist Flea, Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, drummer Joey Waronker and percussionist Mauro Refosco.

It gets confusing: Waronker and Godrich are in another band together (Ultraista), while Flea is also a member of a Damon Albarn-based supergroup. Meanwhile, the Yorke-helmed project Atoms for Peace recently showcased the first official song from the group's album, due next year. The track is called "Default" and has been released on iTunes. It can also be heard at atomsforpeace.info, alongside a lo-fi animated video. The moody track, full of blips and dark synth grooves, recalls the Radiohead man's 2006 solo LP The Eraser, which is appropriate given that he has said the band's name relates to that period.

Summer party for Kanye's clique

Kanye West isn't averse to rap's version of supergroups and for his latest project he's putting together an album with artists signed to his GOOD Music label. Long trailed, the record Cruel Summer is due next week (though it's been delayed on a number of occasions) and said to involve the likes of Pusha T, Big Sean and 2 Chainz. Last week, we got a new single attached to the project, which can be found at kanyewest.com. "Clique" features Big Sean, with Jay-Z also showing up to add his prowess to proceedings – though it's West who is the star of this show.

Why Dedication's what you need

Lil Wayne recently dropped the fourth instalment of his Dedication mixtape series, made with DJ Drama. The previous one from the New Orleans rapper and Philadelphia DJ emerged in 2008, though Dedication 2 from 2006 is said to be the high water mark in the series. The latest can be downloaded free at dedication4.com. It features vocals from the likes of Nicki Minaj, who caused a flutter when she seemed to endorse Mitt Romney on the track "Mercy"; until many, including President Obama himself, suggested that perhaps Minaj was merely rapping in character rather than supporting the Republican presidential candidate.
