Observations: The xx's debut album is transformed into a sound sculpture
Anyone who has seen the south London trio The xx live will have felt the powerful, resonating bass of their hypnotic, off-kilter, minimalist indie. Their critically acclaimed debut album, xx, is now being transformed into a sound sculpture that will enable the listener to experience the album in an even more physical way.
Saam Farahmand, who has made music videos for Klaxons and Simian Mobile Disco, is creating a 3D physical interpretation of the band via light, sound and film. The installation immerses the listener, lending the album format a whole new context.
"Music videos are a D visual interpretation of a song," says Farahmand, who graduated from Goldsmiths in 2002. "We are interested in creating spaces that exist as a 3D physical interpretation of a song or an album, and that is what we have created for the album xx. It is in essence a physical music video, a looping shrine to the album that you cannot compress, send or turn off." This is only the start – Farahmand says there will be plenty more of these kind of installations to come.
