Party Of The Week: Rufus checks in for Prima's premiere

The singer Rufus Wainwright wore a tartan suit designed by Jonathan Anderson to the after party for the London premiere of his debut opera, Prima Donna, saying that it was his own tribute to the late Malcolm McLaren.

After receiving a standing ovation at Sadler's Wells , Wainwright joined friends in the venue's Mezzanine level, including the fashion designer Bella Freud, who hadn't made it to Prima Donna's Manchester premiere last July.

The party's backdrop, of ornate black and crystal candelabras and over-the-top floral arrangements, and an elaborate mirror centrepiece reflected Antony McDonald's stage design for Prima Donna.

The music producer Mark Ronson, looking slick in a powder-blue suit, brought Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran as his guest. Ronson was very impressed by the production, especially as he had never been to an opera before. The star of Prima Donna, Janis Kelly, who plays a once celebrated and wilting opera diva, Régine Saint Laurent, sipped champagne with guests including Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys, Boy George and Graham Norton, as well as Wainwright's boyfriend, Jorn Weisbrodt. Earlier in the evening, Wainwright gave a speech in which he thanked his mother, the folk singer Kate McGarrigle, who died earlier this year.

By midnight Wainwright had left the party, in order to get a good night's sleep. He had to be back at Sadler's Wells the next day for the start of an 11-date solo UK tour.
