Something of a heavy shindig before indie bands took over, Reading and its sibling event re-emphasise the rock with this year's main-stage headliners.
Eminem aside, Nine Inch Nails, System of a Down, Biffy Clyro and Green Day wouldn't shame Download. Indie big-hitters Alt-J, Jake Bugg, Phoenix and Johnny Marr now fill the other stages.
Dance and hip-hop get a good boost, however, from a new Radio 1 stage and main draws like Chase & Status, Azealia Banks and Skrillex, whose brostep beats will give the main-stage leaders a run for their money volume-wise.
