Lulworth Castle, Dorset

Bestival's sister festival's treats for children include a bouncy castle, bikes, go-karts and an area for toddlers. Mums can breast feed at the "Breastival Mother and Baby Chill Out" zone, while the Lower Kids Garden offers face-painting and an insect circus.

Cheltenham Racecourse

A mix of bands including The Proclaimers, Boney M, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Lucy Rose will hit the festival but you could just as easily muck about doing crafts and workshops with the little ones. Check out the Children's Literature Festival, Bollywood Heat Dance workshop and the circus workshop.

Somersault 23-27 July

Castle Hill, North Devon

For those looking to escape the drunken antics at high-energy festivals, Somersault incorporates luxury camping, music, comedy and well-being activities. Harassed professionals go but there's plenty to keep families amused.

Alongside a line-up including Laura Marling and Bombay Bicycle Club, there is the opportunity to take surfing lessons or try out new balance craze ''Ru Slack"; like tightrope walking but with the bounce of a trampoline. Plus: coastal walks, archery, surfing lessons, hiking, falconry.

The price: Adult weekend ticket from £125 plus booking fee; ages 11-17 £75; under-10s £5.

Lunar Festival 5-7 June

Umberslade Estate, West Midlands

The music: Rock, funk, folk, jazz, psychedelia

Lunar Festival, dubbed the mini Glastonbury, is laid-back and family-oriented. Dr Feelgood founder Wilko Johnson headlines. There's a music play area with colourful instruments, bushcraft tutorials and hula-hooping sessions, plus an opportunity to get involved with some Tai Chi.

The Deer Shed Festival 24-26 July

Baldersby Park, Yorkshire

Billy Bragg, The Unthanks and The Pictish Trail will play this cute festival, which boasts 8 tonnes of playsand, milk-warming equipment, a sports field and a cardboard box city.

The price: Adults £119; 6- to 11-year olds £35; 3- to 5-year-olds £5.
