Considered the first concert movie of the rock era, The T.A.M.I. Show documents a 1964 concert in Santa Monica that featured James Brown, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, and other rising Motown and British Invasion acts. On March 23, Shout! Factory is releasing The T.A.M.I. Show: Collector's Edition on DVD, making the film available in its entirely for the first time since its 1964 premiere.
The T.A.M.I. Show (short for Teenage Awards Music International) was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on October 28 and 29, 1964, and the movie premiered in Los Angeles-area theaters on November 14, 1964.
Both the concert and movie are legendary for the performance of James Brown, who demonstrated his soon-to-be-iconic dance moves, as well as for appearances by top and rising acts of the era including Chuck Berry, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, and The Supremes.
While it ranks alongside Woodstock and Monterey Pop as one of the greatest concert films of the 1960s, the movie has been hard to come by since its initial run. It aired on Canadian television on the 20th anniversary of its release and has otherwise been available only in bootleg copies, most of which are missing the footage of The Beach Boys, which was removed from the film after its initial run.
The T.A.M.I. Show: Collector's Edition includes commentary by director Steve Binder, original T.A.M.I. Show radio spots, and a 20-page booklet with liner notes and photos and other memorabilia.
