Taylor Swift was the clear winner at the American Music Awards last night, taking home four awards including ‘artist of the year’.

The 23-year-old also won for country album of the year, best country female artist and best pop/rock female artist.

One Direction, Justin Timberlake and Macklemore were among the most-awarded stars at last night’s award ceremony in Los Angeles.

Rihanna won the ceremony’s first Icon Award at the age of just 25.

Her mother Monica Fenty presented the pop star with the award on stage, telling her daughter “I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one”.

Macklemore, who won for best rap/hip-hop album, paid tribute to Trayvon Martin in his acceptance speech from the road.

“Due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids each year that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it,” he said.
