Arcade Fire dupe fans with 'Daft Punk' during Coachella set
Win Butler's group well and truly 'punked' the eager crowd with their prank
Arcade Fire played a late April Fools' on the Coachella crowd last night when they brought out ‘Daft Punk’ as special guests.
Earlier in the festival, Solange welcomed her sister Beyoncé and famous rivals Nas and Jay Z collaborated, but the twist in the indie group’s surprise was that the robots were little more than a cruel prank.
Frontman Win Butler announced ‘Paft Dunk’ halfway through his band's headline set, but most fans failed to notice the subtle difference in name.
As two men dressed in the French duo’s trademark white suits and helmets emerged for a toned-down version of “Get Lucky”, the punters went wild and Twitter exploded.
Arcade Fire’s nod to Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo followed a song dedication last weekend to “all the bands at this festival playing real instruments”. Butler was hitting out at the deluge of electronic dance music acts in the charts.
It seems somewhat likely, therefore, that ‘Paft Dunk’ was just a bit of a p***take, but representatives for both artists have yet to comment on the legitimacy of the appearance.
Arcade Fire finished off their performance by welcoming Beck for a cover of Prince’s “Controversy”. The US singer-songwriter donned the Pope Francis bobblehead worn by Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul at the first Coachella weekend.
