The hotly anticipated new single from Arcade Fire - an apparent collaboration with David Bowie - was leaked online ahead of its unveiling today.

The band had fuelled hype by releasing a series of cryptic images on Instagram and Twitter and having strange graffiti, hinting that something will happen today, painted on pavements around London.

The single, titled "Reflektor", is due to be officially revealed at 9pm this evening but fans were given an early taste of it when it was leaked on music website Bandcamp.com at the weekend.

Despite being swiftly removed at the Canadian record label's request the brief airplay fuelled speculation that David Bowie can be heard singing backing vocals on the track.

Last week filmmaker Anton Corbijn revealed that the band's mysterious 9/9/9 event would be the unveiling of their new single and music video.

"I'm working on a really great song at the moment: Arcade Fire's new single," Corbijn told the Daily Beast. "The song is called 'Reflektor', and you'll be able to see it Monday ... I can't say much more than that, because it's all a surprise. You'll have to watch the TV Monday evening!"

"Reflektor" is thought to be the lead single from Arcade Fire's fourth album which won't be out until 29 October.

Arcade Fire's last album, 2010's The Suburbs, topped the UK album charts and won a Brit award.
