The 2020 longlist for the BBC's annual Sound Of poll has been revealed, with a number of female artists representing a new wave of British R&B, bedroom pop, and soul.

Among the longlisted artists are Brit Awards Rising Star winner Celeste, dance-pop artist Georgia, art-rock band Squid, emo-pop singer Yungblud, and poet/singer Arlo Parks.

Yungblud is the most high-profile artist on the list – which is voted for by a panel of music industry experts – with more monthly listeners on Spotify (11 million) than all the other acts combined.

The 22-year-old sings about issues including anxiety, youthful disillusionment, sexual assault and corporate greed.

Arlo Parks was named as one of The Independent's ones to watch for 2019, and recently released her latest EP Sophie.

Brighton-formed band Squid have described their music as "the Coronation Street theme tune played on flutes by angry children".
