The mystery which surrounds who allegedly bit Beyoncé has become such a talking point it could end up the next theme for American Crime Story.

Since Tiffany Hadish announced she once saw a fellow actor bite the pop megastar on the face there has been a veritable hunt for the alleged wrongdoer on social media.

Beyoncé’s devoted legion of fans, better known by their shared moniker of the “Beyhive”, have been up in arms in the attempt to track the unknown culprit down.

Haddish told GQ she once met Beyoncé at a party in Los Angeles in December last year which was also attended by the musician’s husband Jay-Z.

According to Haddish, the actor, which she did not name, was at the party “doing the mostest” before biting Beyoncé in the face.

In an earlier version of the story, Haddish suggested the actor had been flirting with musician Jay-Z at the time before Beyoncé got involved.

Haddish, who starred as Nekeisha Williams on NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show, said she later approached Beyoncé about the alleged incident.

“So I said to Beyoncé, ‘Did she really bite you?’ She was like, ‘Yeah.’ I was like, ‘She gonna get her ass beat tonight.’ She was like, ‘Tiffany, no. Don’t do that. That bitch is on drugs. She not even drunk. The bitch is on drugs. She not like that all the time. Just chill,’” Haddish said.

Beyoncé herself has refused to comment and a representative for the musician told the magazine: “I absolutely cannot comment on any of this, as I have no knowledge.”

The incident, which is now being referred to as “bite gate” (obviously, it's always a 'gate' these days), has sparked an internet frenzy, with people tweeting #WhoBitBeyonce in a struggle to identify who it was.

A party guest list assembled by magazine The Cut found actors Sanaa Lathan and Sara Foster attended the party. However, both of them have denied being the alleged biter.

Foster, who starred in TV series 90210, responded to the allegations in an Instagram post. “I wish I could get close enough to Beyoncé to bite her,” she said.

"Y'all are funny. Under no circumstances did I bite Beyoncé and if I did it would've been a love bite,” Lathan tweeted on Monday.

A selfie Haddish posted with Beyoncé in which the side of the singer's face is hidden – maybe to hide the purported bite mark - is being cited as part of the so-called evidence.

Chrissy Teigen has weighed in to say she might know who it is.

"I cannot leave this planet without knowing who bit Beyoncé in the face," the model tweeted on Monday.

She then followed that up with tweets saying, "I can only think of one person who would do this. but I cannot say. but she....is the worst" and "Update it is NOT the person I think is the worst. IM DONE."

Teigen, an avid Twitter user who has developed a reputation for rebuking trolls, tweeted a video on Tuesday quipping she was headed to Today to talk about who bit Beyoncé. But alas the mystery remains unsolved as Beyoncé’s biter remains very much at large.
