News that American supersongstress Beyoncé is to cover the late Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” has been met by surprise, and a demand for a donation to contribute to a charity set up in her name, by the Londoner’s father.

Mitch Winehouse took to Twitter to say: “First I have heard about Beyoncé and 'Back to Black'. Sounds like some of you don't like the idea.”

The cover version, which is due to be recorded for the soundtrack of film The Great Gatsby, will be a duet by Beyoncé and Andre 3000 from Outkast.

Mitch Winehouse, who repeated that he’d been kept completely in the dark about the cover version, suggested a way to win him over, tweeting: “I don't know this but what if Beyoncé gave £100,000 to foundation. Do you know how many kids that would help? Just putting it out there.”

Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s 1929 novel The Great Gatsby is being scored by Beyonce’s husband Jay-Z. "It's a very different take on 'Back to Black'," a source told E! online.

The blockbuster film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role alongside Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire, was initially intended for release last summer. It hits cinemas next month.
