Brit Awards 2016: Adele receives four nominations for album 25

Adele, whose new album has smashed sales records around the world, is expected to add to her trophy cabinet after emerging as one of the frontrunners at the Brit Awards with four nominations.

25 became the fastest-selling album of all time in the UK with 800,000 copies sold in just a week after its release in November.

Adele has been nominated in the categories for British female solo artist, British single, British album of the year and British artist video for the Brit Awards 2016.

The 27-year-old, a former Brit School student will perform at the Brit Awards ceremony on 24 February. Two debutants also secured four nominations. James Bay, described as a “Hertfordshire troubadour”, who had won the Critics’ Choice Brit Award in 2015 is now up for British male solo artist, British breakthrough act, British single and British album of the year. Also receiving four nominations are Years & Years, the synth pop band who previously won the BBC Sound of 2015.

They were formed in 2010 when Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Turkmen met online and recruited actor Olly Alexander after hearing him singing while taking a shower at a friend’s house. They released their debut album Communion in 2015. They are in categories including best breakthrough and group.

They will be up against veterans Blur, who released their first studio album in over a decade The Magic Whip last year. Coldplay are also nominated for their seventh studio album A Head Full of Dreams.

Amy Winehouse has received her eighth Brit nomination; the second posthumous nod after her death in 2011. She won the award for British female solo artist in 2007 following the release of her album Back to Black. She qualifies for the same award after the soundtrack to Amy, the Oscar-nominated documentary about her life, was released last year.
