Britney Spears may be under conservatorship for the rest of her life, former estate manager claims

Singer’s lawyers have claimed conservatorship is ‘voluntary’

Britney Spears’s former estate manager has claimed that the singer could be under her conservatorship for the rest of her life.

The comments were made by Andrew Wallet, who until this week had been at the centre of a legal battle to be reinstated as a conservator of Spears’s estate along with her father Jamie Spears.

The “Toxic” singer’s lawyers had previously told courts in September that Wallet was “uniquely unsuitable” for the role of conservator. On Monday (5 October) Spears withdrew his petition for Wallet to be reappointed.

Discussing the Free Britney campaign, which alleges that Spears is trapped in her conservatorship, Wallet told the Daily Mail: “Britney is in a conservatorship for good reason but a lot of the Free Britney people have no experience with the law.”

He continued: “I have had people in conservatorship who have got themselves right and it has been terminated but you don't see that because they're not people in the public eye. Other people can be in a conservatorship their whole lives. I’m not saying that's going to be Britney but it could happen to her.”

Stating that he believed the conservatorship was in Spears’s “best interests”, Wallet also accused the Free Britney campaigners of complicating the proceedings by pushing an agenda.

“I can't say who but it is hurting Britney, she's the only one who gets hurt by all this,” he said.

Spears’s lawyers have stated that the singer does not want either Wallet or her father to serve as conservator for her estate and is instead asking for a wealth management firm to be appointed to the “voluntary” conservatorship.

The Independent has approached Spears’s reps for comment.
