Britney Spears’s father Jamie accuses her mother Lynne of ‘exploiting’ singer’s ‘pain and trauma’ for profit

Star’s parents in battle over controversial conservatorship

Britney Spears’s father Jamie has accused his ex-wife Lynne, the singer’s mother, of “exploiting” their daughter’s “pain and trauma”.

The accusation appeared in a new court filing, seen by People and The Blast, while the legal battle over Britney’s conservatorship continues.

Lynne, who divorced Jamie in 2002 after 30 years together, is questioning the money he makes as their daughter’s conservator.

She has also scrutinised the legal bills for his attorneys, which are reported to be around $2m (approximately £1.4m). She claimed that some of the legal work done was to repair Jamie’s image in the media, requesting that at least $224,000 be “immediately repaid” to Britney’s estate.

According to court documents, Jamie has retaliated by arguing that Lynne has not been involved in Britney’s conservatorship “until very recently” and therefore has “no knowledge” of the fees. He also claimed that Lynne “is the one who exploited her daughter’s pain and trauma for personal profit by publishing a book”.

The book in question is Lynne’s 2008 memoir Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World.

It chronicles Britney’s mental health struggles and how her fame forever changed the Spears family. In it, Lynne shares her regrets about letting managers, agents, and record companies direct the lives of her children as well as writing about how her failed marriage with Jamie affected them, too.

In the court documents, Jamie also argued that Lynne is “causing undue delay and expense in the administration of the conservatorship, and ironically, stirring up more unnecessary media attention”.

The Independent has contacted the lawyers of Jamie and Lynne Spears, respectively, for comment.

Since 2008, Britney’s affairs have been controlled by a court-ordered conservatorship that allowed her father to oversee her financial affairs as well as her personal life.

While he no longer oversees her personal life due to health reasons, he continues to manage her estate, despite her telling a judge that she wants him removed from the role.
