People worried about coronavirus have found a fun new way to stay safe, by thinking of different popular songs to wash their hands to.

Following advice that people should wash their hands regularly for at least 20 seconds, a number of public officials are recommending different songs to sing along to instead of counting.

National health ministries around the world have suggested people sing “happy birthday” twice as they scrub their hands. The CDC even provides some alternative lyrics to the Patty and Mildred J. Hill classic:

Andrew Selous, a Conservative MP, proposed that people sing the first verse of the national anthem “God Save the Queen” while washing their hands. Health minister Matt Hancock made the same suggestion on BBC Radio 5 Live at the weekend.

Many people have taken to Twitter, making their own song suggestions for washing up from Aqua’s Barbie Girl to the Spice Girl’s Wannabe.

“I’m extra careful and go with Stairway to Heaven” wrote one user,

Baby Shark!!!” said another. “But then you’d be washing your hands all day. It gets in your head and doesn’t leave Weary face”.

Another recommended: “Millennial Handwashing Tip: If you want to make sure you wash your hands for 20 seconds, start singing ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ from “When I was” to “the beaten and the damned.”

People are now using a new website, washyourlyrics.com, which provides an infographic with lyrics to the song of your choice that will last for the appropriate amount of time to wash your hands. It was created by teenager William Gibson, a UK-based developer studying computing at school.

He shared the website last week and it has since gone viral, with more than 100,000 posters created.
