Cupcakke: Rapper confirmed as safe by Chicago police after troubling tweet and Instagram post

Comedian Elijah Daniel, who is reportedly friends with the 21-year-old, said the rapper was taken to hospital 'as a protocol' after police carried out a wellness check at her home

US rapper Cupcakke has been accounted for and her safety confirmed by the Chicago Police Department after troubling messages were posted from her Twitter and Instagram accounts last night (8 January).

The 21-year-old was taken to hospital in Chicago after a tweet was sent from her account that read “im [sic] about to commit suicide”, prompting worried friends to contact police to help find her and ensure her wellbeing.

Chicago Police said Cupcakke was admitted to hospital for a “mental evaluation”, rather than injuries, the BBC reports.

In a separate post on Instagram, she shared a screengrab of the tweet and added: “Thank you for everything y’all have done for me, I really appreciate it.”

The posts sparked widespread concern from fans on social media and an outpouring of support for the rapper, whose real name is Elizabeth Eden Harris.

Soon after the tweet was sent, comedian Elijah Daniel, who is reportedly friends with the 21-year-old, posted a series of updates on his own Twitter account reporting correspondence with Cupcakke’s family, friends, and the Chicago police department.

He said Chicago police carried out a “wellness check” at Cupcakke’s address and she was later taken to hospital.

“I’ve never felt so relieved and sad at the same time,” he tweeted. “@CupcakKe)_rapper I love you more than you’ll ever know. You’re one of the sweetest souls I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing, and you’re not leaving us. We won’t let it happen.”

A further update said: “Police [are] able to [tell me] nothing in the report indicated that she is harmed, and was most likely just taken to the hospital as a protocol.”

Fellow artist Charli XCX posted a message to Cupcakke after the worrying tweet, writing: “You are one of the most unique, genuine and loving people I have ever met in this industry. You are such a HUGE inspiration [to] so many kids, to so many artists, to me. Whenever you walk into a room or onto a stage you exude so much LOVE and the energy in the room turns electric.

“You are powerful. People believe in you. People want to listen to every word you have to say. People are inspired. You have taught me and so many others so much about being ourselves, embracing exactly who we are and being proud of where we come from an what we stand for. You have so much more to teach.

“I have read and heard that you are safe now and that someone is looking after you,” Charli XCX concluded. “I hope those reports are accurate. The world would never be the same without you. We all love you SO MUCH Cupcakke. Please stay strong. Please confide in friends and family. You are such a beautiful and wonderful person and we simply cannot lose you.”

Cupcakke, who rose to fame in 2015 after two of her songs went viral on YouTube, released her fourth album Eden in November last year to positive reviews from critics. She is known for tackling themes in her lyrics that address sexuality, masturbation and body positivity, although other tracks, which are written from Cupcakke’s perspective, are about darker issues such as child abuse and homelessness.

Her UK tour was recently pushed back to March due to visa issues. It is currently unclear if these shows will go ahead.
