A song the Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl wrote for David Bowie prior to his death will soon be released.

Grohl told GQ that he wanted to record the song with Bowie before he passed away, but the legendary artist turned down the collaboration.

"I actually gave it to someone recently," Grohl revealed to the publication. "I tried for years, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. We tried it, kind of worked on it, then I actually contacted Bowie about doing it together for this movie soundtrack, that didn’t work out. He didn’t like the movie, it wasn’t me, it was the movie (laughs)."

According to the 49-year-old musician, a mystery band will be recording the track.

"Then I started working on it again, and I then gave it to another band, who hasn’t used it yet," Grohl said of the song.

When prompted to reveal which band would be releasing the song, Grohl said he didn't want to "spoil the surprise."

In the interview, Grohl also discussed near-death experiences, the last time he got arrested and, of course, Nirvana.

He even revealed that he still can't listen to Nirvana because of trauma from losing Kurt Cobain.

"For years I couldn’t even listen to any music, let alone a Nirvana song,” he told the magazine. "When Kurt died, every time the radio came on, it broke my heart. I don’t put Nirvana records on, no. Although they are always on somewhere. I get in the car, they’re on. I go into a shop, they’re on."

Grohl said that "it's so personal" for him.
