David Bowie reveals details of first box set compilation Five Years 1969-1973

David Bowie's Five Years 1969-1973 comes in CD, vinyl and digital format

David Bowie has announced details of the first in a planned string of box sets celebrating his decades-long career.

Music from his formative early years will kick things off on the Five Years 1969-1973, due out as 12 CDs, 13 LPs and digitally on 25 September.

This period saw Bowie grow musically from folk to glam-rock icon and the set will feature remastered versions of six albums - David Bowie AKA Space Oddity (1969), The Man Who Sold the World (1970), Hunky Dory (1971), The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (1972), Aladdin Sane (1973) and Pin Ups (1973).

There will also be two live albums - Live Santa Monica '72 (2008) and Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture Soundtrack (1983); a two-disc compilation of rare B-sides and non-album singles - Re:Call 1; and a 2003 mix of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust by original producer Ken Scott.

Ray Davies of The Kinks has written a foreword for Five Years, while press reviews and producers' technical notes are also included.

Last year saw Bowie release Nothing Has Changed, his first career compilation, featuring previously unreleased songs alongside his biggest hits.

The 68-year-old will also release a picture disc of his single "Fame" to mark its 40th anniversary in July and is busy working on Lazarus, the musical stage adaptation of The Man Who Fell To Earth.

Bowie played alcoholic humanoid alien Thomas Jerome Newton in the 1976 sci-fi drama and has penned new tracks for the stage show.
