Fan gets backstage after editing band's Wikipedia page to list himself as family

Ever tried to wangle a backstage pass with the well-worn “friend of the band” line? If so, chances are you failed.

Music lover David Spargo knew that if he wanted to trick security into letting him access dance duo Peking Duk, he would have to get smarter. Surprisingly, and concerningly, he managed it.

Spargo attended the band’s gig in Melbourne, Australia on Wednesday night and decided he wanted to meet them. His plan? Edit Peking Duk’s Wikipedia page to list himself as a family relation.

Fortunately, once he reached their dressing room, Adam Hyde and Reuben Styles were impressed rather than creeped out and uploaded a screenshot of the Wikipedia page along with a quote from comedy film Anchorman reading: “Actually, I’m not even mad, that’s amazing.”

“It was probably the most genius, mastermind move that I’ve ever witnessed,” Hyde told the Guardian. “It’s crazy. He just did it on the spot, in a second on his phone. He told the security guard he was our stepbrother or something, and showed them the Wikipedia page and his ID.”

Peking Duk ended up “having a bunch of beers” with Spargo. “He wasn’t a creep or anything, he was like the most normal dude we’ve ever met,” Hyde said. “That’s what makes it more hilarious.”

Hyde and Spargo traded numbers and may even go out drinking again. But clearly, this proves the age-old adage: Never trust Wikipedia.
