The Frozen soundtrack looks set to take The Lion King’s record for the number of weeks a Disney album has spent at number one in the US chart.

The soundtrack to the hit animated film spent a ninth consecutive week at the top of Billboard 200, chasing The Lion King's ten week record.

The album is only the fourth soundtrack from an animated film to top the US album chart, following The Lion King in 1994, Pocahontas in 1995 and Curious George in 2006.

The Frozen soundtrack sold 149,000 copies in the US in the week ending 6 April, and looks likely to top sales of 2 million units next week.

In the UK, the album has been named the top-selling compilation of 2014 so far, selling over 177,000 copies to beat Now That's What I Call Music 86.

Composed by husband and wife duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the soundtrack features hit single "Let It Go", which was performed by Demi Lovato.

The track won the Oscar for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards in February.

Frozen has made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office since its release in November 2013, becoming the highest-grossing Disney animated film of all time.

The film continues to perform well at the US box office, making $399,877 in ticket sales last weekend five months after its release.
