Emily Eavis has confirmed that Florence + The Machine will replace Foo Fighters as Glastonbury's Friday night headliners.

The rockers were forced to pull out after frontman Dave Grohl broke his leg falling off stage at a gig in Sweden last week.

Florence Welch and her band were scheduled to perform second on the Pyramid Stage before the Foos but will now take the top billing.

Eavis confirmed the news on Twitter and posted an official statement on the festival's website.

"Once we heard the sad news that Foo Fighters had been forced to pull out, there was only one person we wanted to call and that was Florence," Eavis said in her message to ticketholders.

"Every time she has played here she's done something spectacular and we always knew she would headline the Pyramid one day. I'm delighted she's agreed to step up to it – she's going to smash it!"

Florence + The Machine scored their third UK number one album earlier this month with the critically-acclaimed How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful.

Full revised timings for the Pyramid Stage will be announced in due course but it is expected that acts will play extended sets to fill the time.
