Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis has described the death threats she received after booking Kanye West to headline the festival in 2015 as “a little harsh”.

Eavis reflected on the backlash against West’s booking in her new book Glastonbury 50, which she co-wrote with her father Michael.

“I actually had death threats in 2015, which seemed a little harsh – especially given that we had booked what we considered to be one of the most exciting and innovative artists of his generation,” she wrote in an excerpt published by The Guardian.

Eavis also explained the criticism they received that year was “extreme” and “quite personal”, describing herself as “an obvious target” given that she books the acts.

She added: “I’ve had to try to develop a thick skin about it, as it can get pretty unpleasant on social media. You can’t please everyone, and the haters tend to be the ones shouting the loudest.”

West, who released his new album Jesus is King on 25 October, has made headlines in recent days for his controversial remarks regarding abortion, as well as for describing himself as “the greatest artist in human existence”.

The Eavis’s new book, published on 31 October, celebrates Glastonbury festival’s 50th anniversary. Diana Ross is the first act to be confirmed for next year’s event.
