Grammys 2021: five key moments from the historic awards ceremony

People on Twitter have poked fun at Elton John’s vow to “hit someone” if Phoebe Bridgers doesn’t win a Grammy after Bridgers was shut out at the ceremony.

Speaking to the Punisher artist on his Apple Music 1 show Rocket Hour, John recently told her: “If you don’t win at least one [Grammy], I’m going to hit someone, OK?”

Twitter users have joked about the singer’s pledge after Bridgers did not take home any awards during last night’s Grammys ceremony (14 March).

Bridgers received four nominations this year, for Best New Artist, Best Alternative Music Album, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance.

It was not long before John’s comments resurfaced online, with many people joking about whether the “Tiny Dancer” singer would follow through on his promise.

“Phoebe bridgers didn’t win the grammy someone keep an eye out on elton john,” wrote one person.

Another added: “elton john on his way to beat up everyone at the grammys because phoebe bridgers didn’t win,” accompanied by a video of a person driving dangerously.

“I want my friend to win a Grammy but I also want to see Elton John beat someone up,” wrote someone else, while another user quipped: “everyone hide from elton john.”

A fifth person wrote: “phoebe was robbed but like not at the same time because fiona [Apple] and meg [Megan Thee Stallion] are just so amazing but at least now we get to see elton john turn violent.”

Tweeting from a spoof account named “Recording Academy / GRAMMYs”, another user added: “guys i’m so sorry i didn’t give phoebe bridgers an award elton john please don’t hurt me.’

In the Best New Artist category, Bridgers lost out to Megan Thee Stallion, whose win she later celebrated in a Twitter post.

The award for Best Alternative Album went to Fiona Apple’s critically acclaimed 2020 record Fetch the Bolt Cutters.

Apple also took home the award for Best Rock Performance for “Shameika”, while Best Rock Song went to “Stay High” by Brittany Howard.
