Joanna Newsom new album 'Divers': Singer returns with Sapokanikan music video directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
New album out 23 October
Five years after her last album Have One on Me, Joanna Newsom is back with a new LP called Divers, dropping a music video for the lead single ‘Sapokanikan’ which was directed by There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson.
Newsom previously worked with PTA on his Pynchon adaptation Inherent Vice, and he actually doesn’t have a lot to do here, with the video simply seeing her wander around West Village in New York.
The song though. It all starts in typical playful folk territory, but builds through some sensational harmonies into a heart-wrenching climax as Newsom strolls through the flashing lights of emergency vehicles.
The new album Divers will be out on 23 October on Drag City. A product listing reads:
‘…Further along and down the road apiece from where she took her leave of us, Joanna Newsom plays on. Breathe deep and equalize your today-ears to the new world of Divers…’
Newsom debuted two new tracks during recent concerts, though neither of them feature on the album (unless they’ve been renamed).
