Major Ace dead: Grime pioneer born Luke Monero dies from brain tumour

Wiley and DJ Target are among those paying tribute

Major Ace, a grime pioneer who was known as part of Pay As U Go Cartel, has died.

The MC was part of a collective which helped to launch the careers of artists including Wiley, Gods Gift, Flow Dan and DJ Target. In 2002, Pay As U Go Cartel reached No. 13 in the UK charts with "Champagne Dance".

Major Ace, whose real name was Luke Monero, had been suffering from a brain tumour for the past three years, died on Sunday 7 October.

His younger brother Cass confirmed the news, writing on Instagram: "My older brother Luke Monero/Major Ace/Majorace Monero Demajor Ace Monero has sadly passed away early hours this morning... I'm in absolute pieces!

"He was suffering from a brain tumour for almost 3 years now... me and my mum looked after him every day and it was our pleasure. What a personality and soul he was! I honestly can't handle any more phone calls but messages are OK... if u knew him or knew of him please share and let everyone know the sad news.

"I'm so proud of my big bro he achieved so much in his short life! Love u bro forever LEGEND IN THE GAME x."

Wiley and DJ Target led tributes to the late artist, along with Mistajam, Chip, Tinchy Stryder and Lisa Maffia.

Wiley wrote: "Rest in Peace Brother... You are the original Wiley the way you got us all together. See u 1 day again brother. Thank you for showing me the way."

"Rest in peace my brother Major Ace. I don't wanna believe the news. Thoughts and prayers are with his family right now."
