Ms Dynamite picked up yet another prize yesterday when she was named media personality of the year at the Race in the Media Awards.

The singer, 21, beat fellow her chart star Craig David and the footballer Rio Ferdinand to take the honour. In the past year, her clutch of awards has included the Mercury Music Prize, two Brits and three Mobos.

Ms Dynamite – real name Niomi McLean-Daley – said of her win: "I'm really happy to get this award. It means a lot that people are noticing that I'm fighting for something positive through my music." The awards, at the Savoy hotel in London, are organised by the Commission for Racial Equality.

Shobna Gulati, who plays the shop assistant Sunita in Coronation Street, won the award for best soap character. Best entertainment show was The Kumars at No 42, and GMTV was named broadcaster of the year.

Hosted by Jon Snow and Lisa Aziz, a Sky News presenter, the awards were attended by stars of TV and radio.
