Noel Gallagher becomes unlikely contender for new James Bond theme: 'I'd do it in a heartbeat'

The Oasis star is not expecting a call from the Spectre director anytime soon

Noel Gallagher has taken rare time out from attacking the state of modern music to volunteer himself for the next James Bond theme.

The former Oasis guitarist would sing the big number “in a heartbeat” if offered the chance by Spectre director Sam Mendes, but is not expecting a call anytime soon.

“I would do it if I was asked,” Gallagher told Germany’s N-TV. “I would do it in a heartbeat. I could do it and it would be great, but I’m not a star and for that you have to be a big star. You have to be someone in America.”

The outspoken musician was rumoured for the Skyfall theme four years ago but brushed off speculation as “bizarre”. The coveted gig eventually went to Adele, who won an Oscar for her efforts.

Sam Smith, Lana Del Rey, Paloma Faith and Lorde are among the names hotly-tipped to perform the main song for Spectre, with Ed Sheeran recently ruling himself out of the running.

“I am a James Bond fan but I think the theme tune should be ballsy and I feel like if I was going to do it, it would sound a bit wet,” he said.

“I think Sam Smith would be perfect, suited up with his strong voice. I’m backing Sam. Anyone from him to Paloma Faith who does the retro thing really f**king well should do it. I’m not ruling it out, maybe in ten years when my balls drop.”

Faith also believes she will miss out because she hasn’t been “cool” enough. “In the industry that I’m in, if you ask for something or you seem like you want something, you don’t get it,” she said last month.

“You’re supposed to pretend that you’re cool as a cucumber and stuff just comes to you, but I’m not really that type of person. I’ve told everyone that I would like to do it.”

The new 007 movie starring Daniel Craig in the lead once more, reaches UK cinemas on 23 October.
