Her performance on The X Factor was by far the most adventurous we have seen so far this season, but Lady Gaga's antics appear to have alienated a mainstream audience that once bought her music in their droves.

Her new single "Venus", from the album ARTPOP, is currently at number two in the iTunes chart. "Do What U Want", the song she released last week, sits at number 12.

The pop star is being beaten in the countdown by X Factor runners-up One Direction, with their new song "Story Of My Life".

However, it is uncertain how the final Sunday countdown will shape up. Both Lady Gaga and the boy band have devoted fanbases who rush out to buy each new single, meaning their songs often drop considerably between Monday and the Saturday night cut-off point for the singles chart.

Lorde, whose song "Royals" enjoyed consistent sales last week on its road to number one, is currently in third place.

The singer's album, Pure Heroine, is at number two on iTunes, behind Arcade Fire's Reflektor.
