Portishead post haunting video of ABBA cover 'SOS' in tribute to Jo Cox

The video ends with a quote from the murdered MP's maiden speech in parliament: 'We have far more in common than that which divides us'

Portishead have finally released their haunting cover of ABBA hit “SOS” in tribute to Jo Cox.

The British trip hop band posted a video for the song on YouTube honouring the much-loved Batley and Spen Labour MP, who was tragically murdered outside her constituency surgery last Thursday.

The eerie monochrome clip focuses on singer Beth Gibbons sitting alone forlornly before reaching out to the camera as a quote from Cox’s maiden speech in parliament overlays her: “We have far more in common than that which divides us.”

Portishead’s “SOS” was first heard in the recent film adaptation of JG Ballard’s 1975 dystopian novel High-Rise, starring Tom Hiddleston and Sienna Miller. It is the Bristol group’s first new song since 2009 but there are currently no plans to release it commercially.

Tributes for Cox have been pouring in since her shocking death, with a Trafalgar Square memorial taking place on what would have been her 42nd birthday on Wednesday.

Tommy Mair, 52, has been charged with her murder. He and identified himself in court on Saturday as “Death to traitors, freedom for Britain”.
