Run the Jewels respond after House delegate quotes lyrics during Trump impeachment trial
Plaskett used the lyrics in her speech speaking out against Trump
Run the Jewels have responded after their lyrics were quoted by a House delegate during Donald Trump’s impeachment trial.
US House of Representatives delegate Stacey Plaskett drew inspiration from the hip-hop group when speaking at the impeachment trial this week. Plaskett also quoted lyrics by Wu-Tang Clan’s GZA.
Run the Jewels member El-P has since reacted to Plaskett’s speech in a series of social media posts.
He wrote: “Uh… apparently my verse from ‘Early’ was just quoted during the impeachment, making it part of the permanent historical record of senate testimony. I’ll just let that sit here for a minute.”
In another post, the rapper – real name Jaime Meline – added: “Remember kids: smoke a whole hell of a lot of weed and maybe one day you too can, like me, write something that ends up being quoted during an impeachment.”
GZA has also responded to being quoted in the trial. The 54-year-old shared Plasket’s tweet – in which the politician confirmed that she had included “two references from the hip-hop genre” – and tagged both Run the Jewels and rapper Killer Mike.
Plaskett is one of nine House impeachment managers outlining the case against the former US President during his ongoing trial.
The Democrat spoke out against Trump earlier this week in a speech which quoted lyrics from the Run the Jewels’s 2015 track “Early” (“Truth is the truth, whether denied or not”) and GZA’s 1999 hit “Breaker, Breaker” (“The truth is usually seen and rarely heard”).
