When Radiohead released their version of the theme song for Spectre on Christmas Day, everyone’s first thought was “holy sh*t, this is amazing”.

Suddenly, it dawned: why would anyone in their right mind use Sam Smith’s ‘Writing on the Wall’ when they have this brilliant track from one the most influential band in recent memory?

Well, that doesn’t matter anymore, what’s done is done and Smith got the gig and has already won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

After the award ceremony, the singer was asked by one reporter how he felt when Radiohead’s frontman Thom Yorke released the song.

“Thom Yorke?” Smith asks before collaborator Jimmy Napes quickly informs him Yorke’s a member of Radiohead. The singer proceeds to look a little befuddled by the question, before saying: “Yes, I was a little bit surprised. Not going to lie, but I haven't listened to it personally.”

Then, pointing to himself and leaning into the microphone, the 23-year-old adds: “because I did the Spectre theme song”. If that sounds bad written down, it’s a whole lot worse on video. Watch below.

Let’s quickly remind ourselves of something Smith has proudly said in the past: “I wrote the Bond theme song in 20 minutes.” That was before the track was even released.

Listen to Radiohead’s phenomenal song below, not used by director Sam Mendes for unknown reasons.

Radiohead recent stoked rumours that a new album could be released any day now by started up a holding company, Dawn Chorus LLP. Despite the heavy speculation, both a new Radiohead album and tour remain unconfirmed.
