Nirvana's 'Nevermind' gets 20th anniversary reissue

Nirvana's Nevermind, considered one of the greatest albums of the 1990s, turns 20 on September 24. To celebrate, the band's label, Universal, is reissuing the album as a four-CD set featuring unreleased recordings.

Announced June 22, the set will also include one DVD featuring BBC radio appearances and unreleased concerts, and the CDs will feature B-sides and rarities. The deluxe package hits stores on September 19 in the UK and September 20 in the US.

Nevermind was the Seattle band's breakthrough album and first album to feature drummer Dave Grohl, who later formed the Foo Fighters. The album was  produced by Butch Vig (tracks were mixed by Andy Wallace, after Kurt Cobain "lamented that the final product sounded too slick," writes news website Seattlepi.com). Vig produced the Foo Fighters' latest album, Wasting Light, which reunited Grohl with Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic.

Grohl told Rolling Stone magazine that fans should expect some surprises: "We have a few things up our sleeves. I can't really say anything yet. But you'll see. It'll be fun." While Universal has yet to release a full track listing, rumors are brewing that the album may feature Vig's original mixes.

Two months after being released in 1991, Nevermind "pushed the grunge revolution to the top of the album charts," writes Spin magazine. The album sold 30 million copies worldwide.
