Album: Beyonce, I Am... World Tour (Columbia)

Even though the CD part of this DVD/CD package is surely intended only as an adjunct to the full multi-media visual extravaganza, it's baffling why it exists at all, as it's one of the most unsatisfying, incoherent entertainment experiences I've had in some while.

Without the visual spectacle putting everything in perspective, it's just a succession of confusing riffs and noises battling for supremacy, fractured by lacunae during which, one presumes, the star is changing costume. Much of the actual singing - refrains and choruses, etc - is the responsibility of the backing vocalists, while Beyoncé interjects lines here and there, her phrases interrupted by surging waves of cheers, as if they were part of the music being mixed in and out. It's a fragmented mess - but if her grotesque over-emoting on "Ave Maria" is anything to go by, legibility could make things a lot worse.
